History

The Lappland Shield was founded by the German Officer Boehme and was awarded to members of the 20th Mountain Army Unit who had served in the Lapland for at least six months. The men in this unit fought a two-front campaign against advancing Soviet and Finnish forces from November 1944 to the war's end.

The date of institution is unknown, although it was likely around March 1945. The badges continued to be produced and awarded in POW camps even after the end of the Second World War.

The Lappland Shield has always been a decoration I have had a soft spot for. I think it's because they were all awarded after the end of the war, in POW camps, made out of anything and everything that was available to them at the time. That level of dedication, even after the war was lost, and the need to have their achievements recognised when there wasn't any more glory to be won, has always fascinated me from a psychological standpoint.

Were the men in both Finnish and Russian POW camps? How many men were in the unit?
