History
The identifying symbol of the Hitler Youth is a rhomboid shaped enamelled (later painted) metal or cloth insignia with two horizontal fields in white and two vertical fields in red, with a superimposed on point square in white (silver on metal insignia) with a mobile black swastika. Due to its shaped, it is often referred to as the HJ diamond.
It is unknown when the insignia was first introduced, however, it would have been 1933 at the latest.
The insignia was worn by members of the HJ and the BDM (League of German Girls), however generally not by members of the DJ (German Youngsters). It was positioned either on the (left) breast or the left upper arm, depending on the garment.
The cloth version was sewn to the garment, while the metal version usually featured a needle pin.
