History
The Star of Malplaquet was established by Oberstleutnant Karl Heinrich von Diebitsch on March 28, 1919. It was conferred upon individuals who demonstrated bravery and merit while serving with the Freikorps von Diebitsch for at least two months. Later, eligibility was expanded to persons who were not part of the Freikorps, but had contributed significantly to the fights in the Baltic region. The award was worn on the left breast.
The award is in the form of a gilded eight-sided star with a round silvered centre, underneath which are two crossed silvered swords. The very centre features a black enamelled eagle around which, inside two circles, is the inscription "SUUM CUIQUE" at the top and gilt laurel with red berries on the bottom. Some stars feature green leaves, some are without berries.
A "simple" version was available for those that were unable or unwilling to pay the high cost of the award. This version was a one-piece gilt construction without any extra colours and without the swords.
The award may feature either pin and screwback fastening devices.
It is unknown how many stars were awarded, but the number was roughly around 200 to 300.
