History
The Iron Roland Badge was founded under the authority of the Provisional Government and Citizen Council of Bremen. It was conferred upon all the individuals involved in the fight for the city of Bremen in the tumultuous post-war times. The badge was awarded until 1925.
The badge is also known as the Bremen Commemorative Medal.
The badge was designed by Professor Kleinhempel.
It is vertically oval and was made of different materials, including iron, brass, copper, and non-ferrous metal. In the centre it features Roland, protector of Bremen. Around him an inscription reads: VRYHEIT DO IK JU OPENBAR - BREMEN 1919, which translates to "Freedom I manifest to you".
There were various manufacturers of the badge over time, resulting in a wide variety of compositions, sizes, and weights. The badges were produced until the 1960s.
Known manufacturers include: Koch & Bergfeld, A. W. Hering, Assmann & Söhne, Gustav Adolf Müller, Deumer, and Steinhauer & Lück.
