The original name of the award is Bewährungsabzeichen des Selbstschutz-Battaillons von Heydebreck.

History

Hauptmann (Captain) Peter von Heydebreck established several Freikorps units between 1919 and 1923. The Guard Battalion von Heydebreck Badge was instituted by him at an unknown date, but likely in the fall of 1921. No further information regarding the institution and statutes of the award is known.

Heydebreck joined the NSDAP in 1923 and his Freikorps took part in the Beer Hall Putsch. In 1933, he was promoted to Brigadeführer of the SA. Hitler had Heydebreck murdered during the Knight of the Long Knives.

The badge is in the form of a bronze-coloured deer skull with large antlers, in between which at the very top is an Imperial crown. In between the antler is a pebbled and silvered area featuring an enamelled shield with the family crest of the Heydebreck's. It features a black cross on white with a round red centre on which, in white and gilt, is a horned helmet with helmet cloths over a slanted shield. The lowest parts of the antlers hold a small sign by means of two chains. The sign features the inscription "JÄGERSCHAR V. HEYDEBRECK".
The reverse features a pinback.
