History
The Argonne Cross was instituted by the Honorary Union of the Saxon World War Participants, a Veterans’ Association in Saxony.
It was founded to commemorate and reward German soldiers who had fought in the campaign in the Argonne Forest, which was one of the most important battles in the final state of the First World War. The campaign lasted from September 26 until October 23, during which time German forces bravely fought against the forces of the Triple Entente.
The Cross was an unofficial award (as were all other badges manufactured during the period) and veterans were required to purchase it themselves.
Approximately 3,000 crosses were issued in total.
