History

This Honourary Title was conferred upon Hungarian artists whose accomplishments furthered the spread and development of socialist culture in the arts, and between artists.

The awards originally featured the 1949-1956 emblem of the Hungarian People's Republic on the obverse, but in 1957 the design of the emblem of the Hungarian People's Republic was changed and the awards were altered to feature the new 1957-1989 emblem.

From 1950 to 1989, the obverse inscription on the I Class Gold Medals was “MAGYAR NEPKOZTARSASAG KIVALO MUVESZE,” and the obverse inscription of the II Class Silver Medals was “MAGYAR NEPKOZTARSASAG ERDEMES MUVESZE.” In 1990, the obverse inscription of both medals was changed to read “MAGYAR KOZTARSASAG KIVALO MUVESZE.”
