History

This Order was a revived version of the Austro-Hungarian Military Order of Maria Theresa, which was discontinued in 1918. The Hungarian Military Order of Maria Theresa was revived by Admiral Nicholas Horthy on August 4, 1938.

The Hungarian version of the Order was awarded to Officers in the Hungarian military. Lower ranking Officers were eligible after rendering an exceptional act of military bravery, while higher ranking Officers were eligible after leading a unit to victory against the enemy.

The Order grades could also be conferred with brilliants, including diamonds and rubies, at the discretion of the ruler.

The Order was discontinued in 1944, and the only awardee chosen prior to its cancellation was Major General Vitéz Kornél Oszlányi, he received the Knight grade.

See Military Order of Maria Theresa, AUT101, in the Orders of Austria (Austria (Imperial)) for more information.
