History
This installment of the Order was re-instituted in 2011, and it is a continuation of the Royal Hungarian Order of St. Stephen that was originally founded as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1764.
This Order is considered to be the highest honour awarded by the Republic of Hungary, and it is conferred to recognize extraordinary merit and outstanding services that have brought international acclaim to the Republic of Hungary.
The Order may be awarded to both men and women.
The only difference between the awards for men and wome, is that the Small or "Kleine" Decoration, and the Miniature Grand Cross Breast Star, are worn on a bow ribbon when awarded to women.
The Small Grand Cross was worn as a less formal version of the full-sized Grand Cross.
These grades, also known as Kleine Dekorationen or Small Orders, adopted the form of the Grand Cross with additional ribbon decorations.
The triangle ribbon of the Small Grand Cross (for Men) features a miniature decoration of the Grand Cross Breast Star.
The bow ribbon of the Small Grand Cross (for Women) features a miniature decoration of the Grand Cross Breast Star.
See Royal Hungarian Order of St. Stephen, AUT102, in the Orders of Austria (Austria (Imperial)), the Order of St. Stephen of Hungary, HUN101, in the Order of the Hungarian Regency (1918-1944) for more information.
