History

This Medal was awarded to Hungarian citizens and foreigners in recognition of successful participation in sporting activities at the national and international levels.

While the Medal was originally instituted by the Republic of Hungary, it was re-instituted and awarded during the Hungarian People's Republic. The medals conferred during the Hungarian People's Republic are almost identical to the medals awarded during the Republic of Hungary, except they are not inscribed with the institution date "1947" on the reverse.

There were approximately 13 Gold Medals awarded during the Republic of Hungary.
