The Merchant Marine Medal was awarded in recognition of 6 months of continuous service on registered Irish merchant ships during the Emergency Period from September 1939 to March 1946. A “1939 1946” ribbon clasp was awarded for each additional 2 years of service.
The Bronze Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "Emergency Period,” the reverse inscription translates to "The Merchant Marine Service,” and the suspension clasp inscription translates to "National Service."
