History

The Xirka Ġieħ ir-Repubblika Medal is awarded to members of the Xirka Ġieħ ir-Repubblika honour society. Membership in this society is conferred in recognition of outstanding service to Malta or humanity and is limited to 20 people. Maltese citizens in the society are called members, and foreigners in the society are called honorary members. Both members and honorary members are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "SG" ("Sieħeb il-Ġieħ").

The motto of the society, which translates to "For the Benefit of the Maltese," is inscribed on the obverse of the medal along with an additional inscription that translates to "Respect the Republic.
