History

The Dogger Bank Medal was awarded in recognition of service in the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1781, a conflict between the Dutch and British fleets during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784). It is recognised as the first military medal of the Netherlands.

It was awarded to military personnel who took part in this battle, including Officers, Junior Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and enlisted men.

The Silver Medal features an obverse inscription that can be translated to "Peace is Sought by War," and a reverse inscription that can be translated to "The Reward for Extraordinary Valour, By the Munificence of the Prince of Orange." It was awarded to Officers and Junior Officers on a red, white, and blue striped ribbon, and to Non-Commissioned Officers and enlisted men on an orange ribbon.
