History

The Carnegie Medal was established by the Dutch Carnegie Hero Fund in 1911. It is awarded to individuals in recognition of heroism and lifesaving, and it is permitted for wear on military uniforms.

The Bronze Medal was originally non-wearable but was rendered wearable in a 1928 decision. These two versions also differ in size. Both feature a reverse inscription that translates to "Carnegie Hero Fund."
