History

The Cross for Four Day Marches was established by the Royal Dutch League for Physical Education (Koninklijke Nederlandsche Bond Voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding) in 1909. This League was previously known as the Dutch League for Physical Education (Nederlandsche Bond voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding) until 1959.

It is awarded to Dutch civilians and military personnel who successfully complete all four days of marching in the annual event and is permitted for wear on military uniforms.

There are two models of the decoration that reflect the name change of the governing association. The first features the obverse inscription “NBVLO,” while the second features the obverse inscription “KNBLO.”

The Gold Cross (without a crown) is awarded for completion of ten marches and the Gold Cross (with crown) is awarded for the eleventh march. The Gold Cross (with crown) is awarded with a number clasp ranging from 12-39 to denote the total number of completed marches. Since 1977, there has been a unique version for marches 40-50, 50-60, and 60-70 that differ in enamel colour. These crosses are also awarded with number clasps that denote the total number of completed marches. From 1911-1977 the clasps were made of silver gilt and enamel, but they are currently made of yellow metal and enamel.

There may be additional versions of the Gold Cross that differ in size and composition.
