History

The De Ruyter Medal was established by Royal Decree in 1907. It is named in honour of Michael de Ruyter, the infamous Dutch Admiral of the 17th century. Although the Medal had always been called the "De Ruyter Medal" in official correspondence, it was not officially known under this name until 1949.

It is awarded to members of the merchant marine for meritorious service in Dutch shipping.
