History
The Navy Long Service Medal was established by Royal Decree in 1845. It is currently awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and enlisted men in recognition of long and faithful service. Service in the colonies counted for twice as long as service elsewhere.
There are multiple versions of the medals that vary in engraving, size and inscription. The first version features a “W” on the obverse for King William, but this was changed by Queen Juliana in 1951 to feature a “J.” Queen Beatrix later changed the obverse to the original “W” in 1983. There have also been numerous changes to the spelling and punctuation of the reverse inscription, although all translate to “For Loyal Service, Royal Navy.” In addition to these versions, there are other versions that differ in size due to a change made in 1928.
There may be additional versions of the Silver Medal that vary in size.
