History
The Medal for Civil Merit was established by the decision of Pieter Mijer, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, as a continuation of the award tradition in the Dutch East Indies. It was permanently suppressed on August 29, 1893, when it was replaced by the Star for Loyalty and Merit.
It was awarded to native citizens for a variety of meritorious services. The reverse inscription translates to "The Dutch (East) Indian Government to [Recipient Details]."
