History

This Cross is conferred by the Chief of Defence, to both Norwegian and foreign, military and civilian personnel, who have exhibited personal distinction, and rendered meritorious efforts to the safety of society, as well as various other forms of distinction in the Norwegian armed forces.

Other recognizable actions include, academic distinction in the relation of developing a departmental standard, or has distinguished themselves as a model citizen for society characterized by responsibility, and departmental enthusiasm.

Other individuals who are not members the armed forces are also eligible to receive the Medal, if they have rendered meritorious actions and there are no other applicable awards for them.

A recipient can only be awarded this Medal once, with no other Norwegian award, in recognition of the same deed.
