History

This Medal is conferred by the Chief of Defence, upon Norwegian and foreign, civilians and military personnel in recognition of exceptional service to the Norwegian Armed Forces and extraordinary personal distinction.

Other recognizable actions include, academic distinction in the relation of developing a departmental standard, or has distinguished themselves as a model citizen for society characterized by responsibility, and departmental enthusiasm, as well as, individuals working a challenging occupation where other Norwegian awards are not applicable.

This Medal can only be conferred upon an individual once.

The design of this medal is identical to the Defence Medal (See NOR138 in Medals & Decorations), but is differentiated by associated clasps on the ribbons. The Defence Medal consists of either no clasp on the ribbon, or star clasps for associated years of service, whereas, the Defence Service Medal with Laurel Branch has a laurel branch shaped clasp on the ribbon.
