History
This Medal was initially conferred upon Norwegian and foreign military personnel in recognition of meritorious service during WWII. It was also awarded posthumously upon members of the Norwegian Forces and Merchant Marine who died during the Norwegian Resistance. Statutes of this Medal were amended on March 16, 2012, and following that date the Medal was conferred upon Norwegian and foreign, civil and military personnel who displayed characteristics of bravery, and leadership during armed conflict or war time.
The obverse design of this medal consists of the royal portrait of the reigning Monarch, with his name and motto.
The War Medal may only be awarded to a recipient once. If an individual distinguishes themselves as worthy for another conferral, a star shape clasp is added onto the ribbon. Until 2012, there was a maximum limit of 3 stars on a ribbon; once amended, there was no longer a stated limit.
In 1951, the issuance of this medal ceased and resumed in 2010.
