History


Established by King Olav V, this Order is conferred upon Norwegians, living in Norway and abroad, foreigners, foreign Nationals, and Norwegian Foreign Service Diplomats, in recognition of exceptional service in the interest of Norway.

The Order has generally been conferred to Norwegian citizens, residing in Norway.

The reigning King is the Grand Master of the Order.

Insignia may be awarded in either gold or silver.

The insignia are returned to the state upon the death of the original recipient, or when the recipient has been awarded a higher rank of the Order.

When conferred upon women the I Class Knight is worn on a bow ribbon, and when conferred upon men, it is worn on a straight ribbon .
