History

The 1939-1945 Star was instituted by King George VI in 1945. The Bronze Star was awarded to British and Commonwealth forces in commemoration of service during the Second World War. The Star was awarded to members of the army and navy in recognition of 6 months of service in specified operational commands overseas while members of the air force received the star in recognition of 2 months of active service. Service curtailed by death, injury or capture, as well as actions recognized by another award or a mention in despatches also qualified.

The clasps "BATTLE OF BRITAIN" and "BOMBER COMMAND" are authorized for wear with the Star. Recipients of a clasp are entitled to wear silver gilt rosettes when the ribbon is worn alone.

The Star may also be awarded posthumously.
