History
The Africa Service Medal was sanctioned by King George VI on November 19, 1943, and was awarded to members of the South African Forces, South African Police, South African Railway Police, and other Union service personnel who served at home and abroad between September 6, 1939, and September 2, 1945. Fulltime personnel must have served for 30 days or more, while part time personnel were required to serve for 18 hours to be eligible for the award.
A bronze Protea emblem, denoting the King’s Commendation, is authorized to be awarded with the Silver Medal and is worn on the ribbon.
The Medal features an engraving of the recipient’s name.
