The British Red Cross Society Medal for War Service was established in 1920 and awarded to all members of the British Red Cross Society who provided 1 year or 1000 hours of voluntary service during the First World War and who did not qualify for other British War Medals. It is estimated that between 41 000 and 42 000 Bronze Medals were issued.
The Bronze Medal is not an official decoration.
Some Medals may be found with a privately manufactured ribbon hanger.
