History

The Afghanistan Medal was established on March 19, 1881. The Medal was awarded to Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and other ranks of the British and Indian Armies in recognition of service in Second Afghan War from 1878-1880.

The Medal could be awarded with clasps that denote participation in specific battles. Multiple clasps could be awarded to the same recipient, with 4 clasps being the most awarded to one recipient. The following 6 clasps were officially awarded:

1. "ALI MUSJID"
2. "EIWAR KOTAL"
3. "CHARASIA"
4. "KABUL"
5. "AHMED KHEL"
6. "KANDAHAR"

The medals were issued named, but many different typefaces were used.

There may be additional versions of the Medal that differ in size.
