History


The Ashantee Medal was established on June 1, 1874. The Medal was awarded to Officers and enlisted men of the British Army, the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, and the Indian Army in recognition of service in the Third Anglo-Ashanti War (1873-1874).

The Medal could be awarded with a "COOMASSIE" clasp in recognition of participation in the Battle of Amaoful on January 31, 1874 and the five ensuing days of combat.
