History

The Ashanti Medal was sanctioned by Army Order in October, 1901. It was awarded to troops and personnel who participated in the suppression of the Ashanti siege, also known as the War of the Golden Stool, between March 31 and December 25, 1900. Silver Medals were awarded to combatants while Bronze Medals were awarded to native transport personnel and servants. The clasp, “KUMASSI”, was awarded to recipients who defended Kumase during one of the several sieges, or who was a member of the relief expedition.

There are 2 versions of the Silver Medal. The first version is struck in low relief and features the designer’s initials, “DeS” on the obverse, while the second version is struck in high relief.
