History
The Army Gold Cross was established by the Prince Regent, the future King George IV, in 1813. The Medal was only awarded for two years before it was permanently discontinued following the restructuring of the Order of the Bath in 1815. It was awarded to British Army Officers in recognition of meritorious service in a minimum of four battles of the Peninsular War (1808-1814). Meritorious service in one, two, or three battles was recognized with the Gold Army Medal. A total of 164 Crosses were awarded.
Additional actions meriting an award were denoted by ribbon clasps. Clasps are inscribed on the obverse with the name of each additional battle.
The obverse features the name of a battle on each of the arms of the cross.
