History

The Capture of Ceylon of Medal was established by the Honourable East India Company in 1796 in commemoration of the capture of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) from the Dutch in 1795. It was awarded to the Indian gunners of the Bengal Artillery who served in the campaign. It is believed that the only two Gold Medals issued were awarded to Subadars.

The reverse features a Farsi inscription that can be translated to "This medal was presented to commemorate good services in Ceylon during the years Hegira 1209-10."

The medals were issued unnamed. It is unknown if the medal was issued with a suspension, or what form this suspension took, as there are several examples that exist. It is often found suspended from a yellow cord.
