History

The Medal for the Capture of Rodrigues, the Isle of Bourbon, and the Isle of France was established by the Honourable East India Company in 1810 in commemoration of the successful 1809-1810 campaign in which British forces gained control of Rodrigues, the Isle of Bourbon (Mauritius), and the Isle of France (Reunion). These islands had previously been controlled by France but posed a significant threat to British trade routes.

The Medal was awarded to Indian troops of the Bengal Army in recognition of service in these campaigns from 1809-1810.

A total of 45 Gold Medals were awarded.

The reverse features a Farsi inscription that can be translated to "This medal was conferred in commemoration of the bravery and accustomed fidelity exhibited by the Sepoys of the English Company in the capture of the Mauritius Islands in the year of the Hegira, 1226."
