The India Service Medal was sanctioned by King George VI on June 6, 1946. The Silver Medal was awarded to Officers and men of the Indian forces, who were not eligible for the Defence Medal, in recognition of 3 years of non-operational service in India and elsewhere between September 3, 1939, and September 2, 1945. It is estimated that 222000 Medals were issued.
