History

The Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal 1953 was instituted in commemoration of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth on June 2, 1953. Approximately 129 000 Silver Medals were issued.

The Medal was worn by men from a ribbon on the breast and by women from a bow on the shoulder.

A special version of the Medal was awarded to the 37 members of the British expedition to Mount Everest, as news that Edmond Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing had surmounted the summit of Mount Everest had reached London on the day of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation. The Medals presented to the expedition were engraved "MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION" on the rim.
