The Empress of India Medal was instituted in 1877. The Medal commemorates the proclamation of Queen Victoria as Empress of India on January 1, 1877. The Medal was issued in Gold and Silver. Gold Medals were awarded to Indian princes and high-ranking British Officials while Silver Medals were awarded to Indian civilians and Officers and men of British and Indian regiments serving in India.
The Medal features a reverse inscription in English, Urdu, and Hindi.
The Medal was issued unnamed but privately altered versions may be encountered.
