History

The James II Coronation Medal was instituted in 1685 to commemorate the Coronation of King James II on April 23, 1685. The Medal was issued in multiple grades. Gold Medals were presented to members of the royal family and Silver Medals were given to members of parliament, judges, and esteemed servants of the royal household during the Coronation ceremony. Bronze Medals may also have been issued to be awarded to commoners, but more research is needed. It is estimated that 200 Gold Medals and 800 Silver Medals were issued.

The Medal features the Latin inscription which translates to "From the Military to the Royal Crown."
