The King's Police Medal (South Africa) was instituted by King George VI on September 24, 1937. The Silver Medal was awarded to members of the South Africa Police in recognition of courage and devotion to duty. The Medal was later extended to reward members of the constabulary of South West Africa.
The Medal features a reverse design that is similar to the Queen's Police Medal.
There are multiple versions of the Medal which vary by the obverse effigy of the reigning monarch as well as the reverse English and Afrikaans inscription of the service recognized. Medals awarded for acts of bravery feature the inscription "FOR BRAVERY VIR DAPPERHEID" while Medals awarded to denote distinguished service feature the inscription "FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE VIR VOORTREFLIKE DIENS."
