History

The Order of British India was established by the Honourable East India Company in 1837 and was later taken over by the British Empire in 1859 following the Indian Rebellion of 1857. It was discontinued following the establishment of Indian independence in 1947.

The Medal was awarded to Indian Officers of the Indian Army in recognition of long and faithful service. In 1939 the award was extended to officers of the Indian Armed Forces, the Military Police, and the Frontier Corps. Members of the Order were first admitted as members of the II Class, and could only be admitted to the I Class after rendering additional meritorious service.

Members of the I Class were entitled to use the formal title Sardar Badahur, and members of the II Class were entitled to use the formal title Badahur.

There are two versions of the I Class Medal that differ in the enamel colour of the obverse medallion. Only the I Class Medal features a crown.
