History
The Sea Gallantry Medal (Foreign Services) was established as the Board Trade Medal for Foreign Services by the Foreign Office in 1839 and was approved by Queen Victoria in the same year. The Medal is awarded to foreigners and British citizens stationed aboard foreign vessels in recognition of saving the lives of British citizens at sea.
There are a number of different versions of the Medal that differ in size, design, engraving, and inscription. From 1839-1854 the medal was large and unwearable but was altered and rendered wearable in 1854. All Medals have been issued named. From 1839-1849 a unique dedication was inscribed on the reverse, but this was superseded by a less expensive standard reverse in 1849. They have since been named on the rim.
There may be additional versions that differ in size.
