History

The RSPCA Margaret Wheatley Cross was established by the RSPCA in 1936. The Bronze Cross, named in commemoration of 16-year-old Margaret Wheatley who was killed by a train on June 4, 1936, while saving a dog, is the RSPCA's highest award and reward in recognition of bravery in animal life-saving.

The Cross may be awarded posthumously. Approximately 70 Crosses have been awarded, with around half of awards being made posthumously.
