History
The Messina Earthquake Merit Medal was issued by the King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele III, in 1908. The Medal was awarded in Gold, Silver, and Bronze to foreign and national personnel in recognition of distinguished assistance, medical treatment, and other services provided to the victims of Messina during the aftermath of the Messina earthquake of December 28, 1908, which took the lives of a third of the population of Messina. A 40mm Medal was awarded to institutions and organizations while a 30-35mm Medal was awarded to personnel who participated in rescue operations. Approximately 300 Medals were awarded.
The Messina Earthquake Merit Medal is associated with the Messina Earthquake Commemoration Medal was also instituted by King Vittorio Emanuele III to reward Officers and men of the British Royal Navy and members of the Mercantile Marine for providing service in the relief operations of Messina following the tragic earthquake.
