History

The Arctic Medal 1857 was instituted on January 30, 1857, and awarded retrospectively to all civilians, scientists, Officers and men of French, United States, United Kingdom and other Commonwealth navies, and to Hudson Bay Company personnel who were engaged in discovery and search expeditions in the Polar regions between 1818 and 1853. Silver Medals were awarded to personnel involved in the search for the Franklin expedition between 1843 and 1848. It is estimated that 1486 Medals were awarded.

The Medal was issued unnamed, but privately altered versions may be encountered.
