The Malawi Independence Medal 1964 was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II on May 29, 1964, in commemoration of Malawi's Independence. The Medal was awarded to members of the Malawian defence force and police force who served during Malawi's Independence on July 6, 1964. The Medal was also awarded to citizens and civil servants in recognition of meritorious and faithful service provided to Malawi.
