History
The Malta George Cross Fiftieth Anniversary Commemorative Medal was sanctioned by the Malta government on January 1992 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the award of the George Cross by King George VI to the Island in recognition of its heroic resistance during the siege of Malta during the Second World War. The Medal was later approved for wear on the uniform of British citizens by Queen Elizabeth II. The Medal was awarded to surviving veterans or to the next of kin of personnel who served in the allied forces or merchant marines, were civilians on Malta, or were members of the Scout Association of Malta between June 10, 1940, and September 8, 1943.
To be rewarded the Medal, eligible veterans or next of kin must have applied for the award by April 15, 1994. However, since a number of veterans did not apply for the award before the cut-off date, the Maltese government sanctioned a second striking which features the inscription "COPY" on the reverse.
Official copies are expected to be of a lower value than original versions and are not featured here.
