The Papua New Guinea Independence Medal 1975 was authorized by Queen Elizabeth to commemorate Papua New Guinea's transition from self-governance to full independence from the United Kingdom on September 19, 1975. The Medal was awarded to Papua New Guinea Defence Force personnel and civilians in recognition of exceptional service provided between December 1, 1973, and September 16, 1975. Military and civil personnel from Commonwealth realms were also eligible for the award.
