History
The award was instituted in late 1943 by Generalleutnant Richard Schimpf. Details about the institution are not known.
The award is rectangular, with a border of 80 static swastikas. It shows a crest with seven indentations at the bottom. The crest features an attacking eagle, flying to the viewer's right, carrying a stick grenade. In the upper right corner is the division's pennant inside a wreath of oak leaves. At the bottom of the crest the church of the town of Dretino is shown.
The inscription on the lower portion of the plaque reads: in recognition of special merits in the division / the commander of the 21st Luftwaffe field division / 1942.
