History
The Sports Wreath badge was instituted by the Association of the National Motoring and Aeronautics Movement, a post-war society that focused on encouraging research and development in the motor industry and aviation. This civil sports society also sought to encourage an interest in these spheres amongst German youth.
The association was also involved in secret activities to accumulate resources and plan a way to restore the German Air Force, which had been banned by the Treaty of Versailles following the German defeat in the First World War.
The badge was conferred upon high ranking and prominent members of the association during the Weimar Republic and the early years of the Nazi regime.
Famous recipients of the Gold Badge include Hermann Göring and Adolf Hühnlein.
