History

James William Benson was born on April 12, 1826 in Reading, Berkshire. In 1847, he and his brother Samuel Suckley founded "S.S. & J.W Benson." This company was active until 1855 when the company dissolved. From then until his death on October 7, 1878, Benson continued his firm as "J.W Benson" which was taken over by his sons, Alfred and Arthur.

During his time as a watchmaker and goldsmith, Benson was the official watchmaker to the Admiralty & the War Department. He was also known for being the watchmaker to Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, the Tsar of Russia and several other royal families.

The firm was originally located at 4-5 Horseshoe Court. They relocated to a new factory in 1892, situated at 38 Belle Sauvage Yard. During the Second World War, the factory was bombed. J.W Benson remained a retailer but stopped creating timepieces, and moved to join the associated company, Hunt & Roskell at 25 Old Bond Street. In 1973, the company was purchased by Garrards.
