History
The Decoration for Heroism (Ot Hagvura), or the Hero of Israel Decoration, was established by the President (Knesset) of Israel, Dr Chaim Weitzmann, in 1949. The award was created prior to the implementation of the Medal Act 1970 which instituted Israel's Orders and Decorations system, and as such was issued as a ribbon only award. The Decoration was conferred upon Israeli military personnel in recognition of distinguished service during the War of Independence/1948 Arab-Israeli War between 1948 and 1949. Only 12 Decorations were awarded. The Decoration was replaced by the Medal of Valour in 1970.
The Decoration may also have been awarded posthumously.
Recipients are authorized to use the title "Gibor Israel" or "Hero of Israel."
