History

The Police Medal of Courage (Itur HaOmets) was established by the Law of Decorations of the Israel Police and Prison Service in 1972 or 1974. The Medal is awarded by the Cheif Commissioner of Police to members of the Israel Police Force in recognition of acts of extraordinary gallantry in lines of duty which involve the risk of life. Civilians who have performed acts of legal arrest under arrest authority, fulfilled a legal duty, assisted police personnel in performing a legal arrest, or who have provided service during serious crimes or disaster may also be eligible for the award.

The Medal may have been awarded posthumously.

Additional awards are denoted by clasps worn on the ribbon.

There are multiple versions of the Silver Medal which vary by composition. There may be additional versions which differ by design.
