History

The Order of al-Hussein bin Ali was originally established by King Abdullah I of Jordan on June 22, 1949. The Order was created in honour of the King's father, and it was instituted 1 month before the assassination of the King. The Order was later reformed by King Hussein on September 23, 1967; who extended the award to Jordanian nationals and added a second class and ribbon. The Order is the highest knighthood Order of the Kingdom of Jordan.

The II Class Grand Cordon is awarded Jordanian and foreign princes and princesses, heads of states, and consorts of heads of state.
